I find myself in the unenviable position of agreeing with the right-wing nationalists of the Hungarian Conservative Fidesz Party, who are opposed to allowing Muslim refugees to enter Hungary. Pres. Orban of Hungary has stated quite frankly that there are no Muslims in Hungary and they don’t want them there. He claims that they fought off the Muslim invasions 500 years ago, not to be overtaken now. Actually he is right, he wants to avoid the future problems that will arise from taking in hundreds of thousands of people with an alien culture (the EU estimates 750,000 this year and the same number next year). Unfortunately this is the way they treated the Jews too, however hard they tried to assimilate. Although 1.5 million refugees seems a small number in comparison to the 450 million people of Europe, nevertheless, for the small countries of eastern Europe, including Greece, Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary and Austria, such a deluge of migrants could be devastating. That is why some of the countries are following Israel’s example and putting up fences to prevent being overwhelmed by these alien hordes.
Unfortunately for the Hungarians, they are signatories of the Schengen Agreement, whereby EU countries agreed to remove all borders and passport controls within the EU. As a consequence a compromise has been arrived at, the Hungarian authorities are now registering the migrants and then giving them free passage thru their country by bus or train to the border with Austria to allow them to go on their way to Germany or Scandinavia where most of them are headed and where there is a welcome and the ability to absorb them.
But, these countries are importing future serious problems. I saw an interview on France24 with an American-Egyptian writer Mona Eltahawy, a very articulate feminist, who was born in Egypt, graduated from Cairo University and moved to the US, becoming a citizen in 2011, but returning to live in Cairo after the revolution against Mubarak in 2012. She has written a book entitled “Headscarves and Hymens: Why the Middle East Needs a Sexual Revolution.” She claims that she was raped in Cairo and stated that one third of all women in Egypt have been raped or sexually assaulted. One remembers the terrible scenes of mobs of men raping and beating women in the crowds on Tahrir Square. She pointed out that the Europeans are importing a future serious problem of mass rapes. She says (from the inside) that Islam is an extremely conservative religion/culture that is deeply misogynistic.
When you see the waves of migrants that are invading Europe from Africa (Libya to Italy by boat) and from Turkey (to Greece and then north), the media mostly show the women and children, and the drowned children, because that gets notice and a lot of sympathy. What they don’t show you are the majority (90%) of young men, who are tearing up the countryside, who are prone to violence and who are demanding rights that they don’t have. When they get to Germany and get settled, then they will go out and find themselves European women and rape them, it’s as simple as that. Then there will be a wave of women wearing hijabs with European Muslim children. Welcome to the future.
